Fans of British comedies such as Good Neighbors (The Good Life in England) or Yes Minister will smile with appreciation at these extremely enjoyable episodes of To the Manor Born. Those familiar with the series will recognize that they are in the thick of the friendly feud between the excruciatingly British Audrey Forbes-Hamilton, former owner of Grantleigh Manor, and the new owner, nouveau-riche grocery-chain king Richard DeVere.
In the first episode of this volume (and the fifth in the series), "The Hunt Ball," sly tricks from both Audrey and Richard result in Audrey organizing the traditional Hunt Ball at Grantleigh Manor, but finding herself forgotten on the guest list. The second episode, "A Holiday at Home," has Audrey pretending to holiday in Spain (while sunning at home), after too many "You really should go on holiday!" remarks from everyone she knows. The discovery of her charade results in an unexpected trading of confidences with the handsome Richard DeVere. "The TV Commercial" has Grantleigh Manor and owner DeVere starring in a television commercial. Audrey, of course, cannot simply stand by and watch Richard embarrass himself (and Grantleigh Manor) as he struts around in "hunting pink" and pretends to be an English gentleman.
Penelope Keith is the perfect Audrey Forbes-Hamilton, and her worthy adversary, Richard DeVere, is portrayed to perfection by Peter Bowles. As Richard and Audrey constantly trump one another, you never know who will come out on top, and it is always entertaining to watch! --Amanda Powter
