Dense plots with a gothic sensibility and sophisticated animation characterize this futuristic series based on anime first released in 1979. This volume contains episodes 5to7 from the series shown on the Cartoon Network, in which rebels from Earth's outer space colonies battle the home planet using huge robot armors called Gundams or mobile suits. In the first episode, Relena accompanies her father, Minister Darlian, to the colonies in a last-ditch effort to negotiate peace, when he is taken down by assassins and reveals the secret of her parentage during the ambulance ride. In "Party Night," a mournful Relena returns to Earth and attends a school dance, only to learn that her friend, Heero--a rebel assassin--has transferred to another school. When Gundams are sent to finish the job started by her father, Heero saves her against orders and his better judgment. "Scenario for Bloodshed," the tape's final 22-minute episode, finds the Gundam pilots attacking the peace-loving alliance, with Heero sent on a mission against Oz. The video's mature themes of war and the dark side of human nature could prove disturbing for most children, making it probably best suited for teenagers, yet the fare is popular with the 7-and-older crowd. The "uncut" version includes harsher language (but no swearing) and slightly more violence, and is recommended for an older audience. --Kimberly Heinrichs
